Frequently Asked Questions: How?Everyone who owns a camping tent is invited to bless a family in Haiti who needs shelter from sun and rain. This will be accomplished by each person taking their tent(s) to a Collection Site, regardless of how far away. In extreme cases the tent can be shipped via a package courier such as UPS or FedEx. If a person who wants to help either does not own a tent or else simply wishes to send a brand new one to Haiti, that can be done easily in person or online through Internet shopping. Tents obtained online can usually be "drop-shipped," or delivered to the nearest registered Collection Site. (See Collection Sites in the menu bar on the left).
When?Occasional downpours and rains are already beginning to be a factor in post-earthquake Haiti. To be optimally effective, the mission of the Tents 2 Haiti campaign must be effectively completed by the end of March. Tents delivered after that date will still be appreciated, but necessity dictates that everything be done as soon as possible.
What?Tents 2 Haiti is a grass-roots movement of churches and ministries which are forming across all denominational lines. Various individuals and organizations are now banding together to collect tents for shipment to Haiti before the rains hit the last week of March. Churches are registered to function as Collection Sites for the campaign.
Why?RAIN IS WET
No one likes to live, eat and try to sleep in the rain. No parent on earth wants his or her children to be exposed to constant dampness. It is unhealthy.
COOKING FUEL MUST REMAIN DRY
Haitian people purchase charcoal as their primary cooking fuel. Doing so typically consumes about one-half of their meager income. Wet charcoal doesn't work well.
CHICKENS AND TARANTULAS
Animals and insects must be kept away from humans and stored food. A simple camping tent can be effective barriers.
PRIVACY & SECURITY
Privacy is a commodity cherished all around the world. Almost every Haitian homeowner has lived behind a perimieter wall all of their lives with access possible only through large, heavy, metal gates. The earthquake destroyed some stretches of most of those perimeter walls leaving the family exposed and vulnerable. A tent keeps belongings and activities a little more private and provides at least a sense of security.
Where? This campaign will at least begin along the entire length of the Eastern Seaboard of the United States as tents are collected and will ultimately end with those same tents being distributed throughout Greater Port au Prince and other damaged areas of Haiti. |
